My fairy child manifested this perfect rainbow fairy dress for Halloween…she has a knack for making beautiful things appear out of thin air. 🧚‍♂️🌈💫

I’ve been navigating burnout the past year, and the greatest medicine has been intentionally looking for (and even worshipping!) the magic of childhood.

Sparkles, glitter, make believe, imaginative play, frolicking in the sunlight - all of these simple gifts bring me such joy when shared with my child and the children in my village. ✨ I delight in documenting the magic around me with my phone camera, it’s an accessible way of stimming for my neurospicy brain and helps me focus on just one sensory experience, filtering out the noise (and anxiety in my head). I felt immense joy — glimmers— documenting my child’s delight in her magic dress and sharing it with you. And as @jessd.light said when I shared these pics with them, my child IS the dress! 👗

Shoutout to @magikcraft for being a source of spiritual delight and community for me and my child for her entire life. We frequent this special magic shop often and admire the crystals and tarot decks. I’ve definitely cried in the store and received so much encouragement from the staff who are always happy to share their insights, dream symbols, and astrological knowledge with me! It’s truly a magical place!

On Indigenous People’s Day, I woke up to footage

On Indigenous People’s Day, I woke up to footage of Pal3stinian$ being burned alive. Indigenous people are not “from the past”; they are still here, enduring displacement, brutality, and gen0cid3 from colonization.

The US is only 243 years old, yet Indigenous people continue to breathe, live, and love their land despite ongoing attempts to erase them.

In the portal of the pandemic, I reconnected with my ancestors, including my detribalized great-grandmother and her mother, whose spirits often visit me in the form of a hawk. 🦅

I’ve hesitated to claim my Indigenous roots, but that hesitation reflects the colonizer’s narrative that profits from my silence. My Indigenous ancestors on my maternal grandfather’s side have been silenced for too long. My great-grandmother Nora was orphaned after her mother was killed by a white man. Nora painted and passed down her gift of vision to me. It’s time to reclaim these stories.

Witnessing the gen0cid3 of Indigenous people over the last 373 days has shattered me, but it has also unleashed something wild and ancient within. We are not separate; the past is the present. Pain travels through families until someone is brave enough to confront it.

So I’m painting a hawk to process my grief and rage in these Tower Times. This piece is my offering to my Indigenous ancestors and to Indigenous peoples everywhere. We are here, we are now, and we will be free. 💫

7 years ago to date on a road trip to my hometown of St. Louis, I stopped in a field of a corn in Burnt Prairie, Illinois to make a self portrait. 🌽 I’ve always felt a connection to cornfields - I learned to drive a car at age 15 on a country road flanked by tall, green stalks of corn. At age 30 I would merge with the corn once again, and now at age 37, I remember.

Burnt Prairie is the ancestral lands of the Myaamia, Kaskaskia, Kiikaapoi, Shawandasse Tula, and Osage peoples. Many displaced Woodland tribes further North and East migrated to Illinois, and then to Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. These are my people - the land was calling me home. Without consciously knowing my ancestral connection to this land, I knew. I had vision.

The multiple gen0c1d3s of indigenous people around the world has unleashed an ancestral rage deep inside me. The 347 days of bloodshed in G@z@, beheld on my phone in my hands, has released something primal inside of me. The tears I’ve cried have trickled back generations to my native ancestors who also knew this violence of colonialism. I am of them. My tears are theirs.

My great grandmother Nora was orphaned when her indigenous mother died violently at the hands of my white ancestors. She kept her heritage a secret until her death, according to my grandfather, who recalled his mother’s “midnight black hair and loving ways.” She passed down her pain with each generation until someone was brave enough to feel it…and that was me.

I remember. The colonizers have tried to destroy us, but there is a deep memory, an untouchable spirit that can never be eradicated. I remember, I remember, I remember. (Continued in comments)

Watercolor butterflies 🧚🦋 My week 1 summer c

Watercolor butterflies 🧚🦋 My week 1 summer campers made these gorgeous butterflies! Aren’t they pretty?

🪄First we learned 8 watercolor techniques - wet on wet, wet on dry, oil resist, drip, splatter, sponge, stamp, and salt!

🪄Next @retrouvaillesart and my high school counselor Kai drew 13 different butterflies - 1 for each student. They used pencil and then outlined the butterflies in thick sharpie.

🪄 The students picked at least 3 techniques to fill in the butterflies and then let their art dry.

🪄 They added more mixed media layers with posca pens, rainbow gemstones, sequins, or oil pastel.

Aren’t their butterflies cute? 🦋🦋🦋

Happy summer solstice! ☀️ Summer art camps beg

Happy summer solstice! ☀️ Summer art camps began last week and the art-making momentum is building! We’ve really enjoyed making summery art! 🌊🏝️🐙☀️🌻 Sun catchers, watercolor sea shell buntings, and flower crowns are just a few projects we’ve enjoyed.

I think I’ll make some reels soon and art project tutorials so you can join the fun! These projects are catered for K-4 grades but honestly they can be adapted for all ages and your inner child too! Which project do you want to see first? 🌈

Photo 1 - Zeynep made flower crowns with the kids during our recess last week. I’m so grateful to have @retrouvaillesart on my art camp team this summer! She brings so much beauty everywhere she goes! 🧚

Photo 2 - watercolor seashell for a bunting. I got so into this one and am adding pen detail to my shells before I string them together 🐚

Photos 3-4 - sun catchers for the solstice! ☀️ we used paper plates, tissue paper, glue, paint, string, and beads!

Photo 5 - nature’s art! I stumbled across this gorgeous sunflower and assassin bug nymph today. I love the little ant on the flower too. 🌻

Photo 6 - the first steps of our watercolor seashells. We used oil pastels to resist the paint and create this textured effect.

Photo 7 - i offer plenty of structure in my camps but also love providing a container for free play! My students last week wanted to explore jewelry making and asked to make bracelets!

Photo 8 - watercolor techniques is always a hit! This lesson is great for process art, with a nod to science! 🧪
