5 Facts You May Not Know About Me! | The Creative Soul behind Courtney Potter Studio

I’m Courtney: the the photographer behind the camera, the painter behind the easel, and the creative soul behind Courtney Potter Studio. I’m passionate about demystifying the creative process and sharing the ins-and-outs of my artistic journey with you!

I’ve worked as a professional wedding photographer, filmmaker, and artist for the last decade. Here are some facts about me that you may not know:

1) I just celebrated my birthday this April by rollerskating to honor the middle-school girl still inside me.

I turned 31, but I’d like to think I’m just adding another new layer to my being.

2) I’m an Aries sun (9th House of travel), Cancer moon (12th House of dreams and the unconscious) and Leo rising (all the drama!)

I’m fascinated by the connection between the cosmos + intuitive knowledge and loooove anything written by Chani Nicholas, my queer feminist spiritual muse.

3) I originally dreamed of being a newspaper photographer, but I guess I was born into the wrong era.

The year I interned at the Naples Daily News, the economic recession hit newspapers hard. It was a dark and dismal time to be a photojournalist (or get a job!), and the jaded, time-weary photojournalists at the paper urged me not to apply for photo jobs at newspapers. “DON’T DO IT! GET OUT AND SAVE YOURSELF!” I heard this every day, which was weird for my wide-eyed 21-year-old idealistic self who went to drum circles and felt like the world should have been at my fingertips.

Upon graduating, I decided to give running my own business a try…and holy moly am I glad I did! 9 years later, I’m still calling the shots and living a deeply fulfilling life of a creative soul

I feel honored to be able to help people tell their unique story through my photography, and to inspire my collectors to find greater creativity and wholeness through my paintings.

My path as a creative soul may have started with the desire to be a newspaper photographer, but the destination I’ve arrived at is so much more than I could have imagined.

4). For you Myers-Briggs fans out there, I’m an INFP.

Translation: I daydream. All. The. Time. And feel. All. The. Things. I’ve gotta paint and write and blast music to get it all outta my body!

5) Relaxation doesn’t come easily to me.

I have tons of energy and prefer to be rock-climbing, dancing, traveling, creating art, running, or doing something that gives me an endorphin rush. But to truly unwind, I nerd out with a fat stack of books in my favorite papasan chair, my cat purring on my lap.

Right now I’m reading a research book about autoethnography and am slowly making my way through a stack of books by some fierce women- Amanda Palmer, Jessi Klein, and Sonya Lea’s memoirs are on the top of my stack.

What about you? What’s on your bookshelf? What is your Myers-Briggs or sun/moon sign? I’d love to know! Comment below!
