Winter is hands down my favorite time to photograph engagement sessions in North Carolina. You don’t have to deal with crowds, mosquitos, hurricanes, pine pollen, or sweat ruining your makeup. The sun sits lower in the sky, casting a lovely golden glow over the horizon much earlier in the day.

And sometimes you get 70 degree days…in January. Nida + Clay share my distaste for bugs + heat, so we picked a beautiful 70-degree “winter” day and played in the woods for their engagement session last month.

More meaningfully, Nida + Clay decided to take pictures in Umstead Park, since that was the location of their first date (a nine-mile run!) after meeting at the Fullsteam Run Club. I didn’t make them run nine miles for this session, but we did get a workout walking the trails in the park. 🙂

Nida + Clay, thanks for being so laid-back and fun during your session! I loved the ideas you brought to the table and really enjoyed collaborating with you. Thanks for so eagerly embracing the concept of #brinsonbanksing, too, haha! I hope you love your photos!!

Teague + Tim tied the knot in a classy, intimate evening wedding at Caffe Luna in downtown Raleigh on November 5, 2016.

This was such a fun way to end the 2016 wedding season, as I couldn’t have asked for a more adorable couple who gave me carte blanche to carry out my creative vision.

Often wedding days are packed with one event after another, but Tim and Teague wanted to have ample time for portraits. So we spent a glorious stretch of time wandering from one cool spot to another during “golden hour,” spanning City Market, Historic Oakwood Cemetery, and even Pup’s Day Out to visit their fur-babies.

Read the Q&A with this spunky couple, featured below, to learn more about their wedding inspiration and photography experience!

1. What are some of your favorite things about your partner? How were these attributes expressed during or leading up to your wedding?

Tim: We didn’t have a very long engagement, while I wouldn’t say Teague is super detail-oriented, she was very decisive.  Teague is a creative problem solver and, as a result, our wedding process wasn’t stressful, which is what you often hear.  I also admire Teague’s intelligence, and I think because she thought through everything ahead of time, things came together really well.

Teague: Tim is more optimistic than I am, and sometimes throughout the wedding planning process, his optimism was necessary for me as I would often say “we should have just eloped” anytime something would come up.  Tim is reliable and was solely responsible for our cake and DJ.  It was really wonderful being able to rely on him and not feeling like I had to make every decision.  Tim is a loving and supportive partner, and our wedding planning process really just reiterated how lucky I am to have him.

2. What was most important to you in planning your wedding?

The most important part of our wedding planning was to keep things simple.  So much of the wedding industry has “must do’s” and it was important for us to think through these checklists to determine what was important to us.  We didn’t have a wedding party, which alleviated many of the costs/time involved in planning a wedding.  The venue we selected handled every aspect except the flowers/cake.  Not having to worry about minor details was very important.  As a result, our wedding day honestly wasn’t stressful and we could just enjoy ourselves.

3. Are there any details or moments from your wedding that are particularly special to you? (E.g., you wore your momma’s dress, your partner unexpectedly serenaded you, there was a double rainbow all across the sky…).

Tim: The first look pictures were special as well as Teague’s brother, Charlie, singing while she walked down the aisle with her father.

Teague : My favorite moment was when Tim and I first saw each other, I loved that it was just us plus our awesome photographer.

4. Now that you’ve tied the knot (and survived!), what advice would you give to other folks planning their wedding?

A bit of practical advice first: don’t get a hotel block, there are many online options for guests.  But most importantly, I would say surround yourself with a good team and let them do their jobs, these are professionals that don’t need to be micromanaged.  Focus on yourself, don’t worry about what others will think, just do what makes you happy.

5. What drew you to my photography style? Why did you ultimately decide to hire me? Was it worth it? 🙂

I really liked that you didn’t have many staged photos, they all felt like honest moments that you captured.  A lot of the wedding photographers have almost identical photos for every wedding they shoot, and I loved your documentary style that showed the personality of the couples.  We ultimately hired you because we felt comfortable around you and we really enjoyed hanging out with you, you put us at ease.  Choosing a photographer is the biggest decision we made in planning, and we knew you would be trustworthy and give us great photos to keep forever.

6. What is the first things you want to do with the images? Wallpaper the hallway? Internet fame?

We cannot wait to see them and order a ton!  We will use them as thank you cards and gifts.

7. What is next for you as a couple? Any big plans?

We are planning our honeymoon to Australia/Fiji next year!

8. Anything else you’d like to add?

We can’t imagine having a different wedding photographer on our day.  A couple of other photographers we met with had preconceived notions of the photos we “must have”.  You really listened to what we wanted and what was important to us, even if it meant going to our dog’s boarding location and the cemetery!

Teague + Tim, thank you for being such fun and down-to-earth folks! I honestly couldn’t have imagined a better way to end the 2016 wedding season. I enjoyed every minute with you (especially over beer + giant pretzels) and am looking forward to our post-wedding portrait session later this winter. 🙂 I hope you enjoy your pictures!

Amelia + Mark threw a wicked dance party in their Raleigh outdoor wedding celebration at the Park Alumni Center (go Wolfpack!)

This gregarious couple was intentional about planning a celebration that emphasized inclusion, diversity, and authenticity. The cherry on top: an Irish dance performance during the reception. This wedding was such a unique, refreshing wedding to photograph, and I’m so pumped to share the pictures from their day!

Read the Q&A with this fun couple, featured below, to learn more about their Raleigh outdoor wedding inspiration and photography experience!

1. What are some of your favorite things about your partner? How were these attributes expressed during or leading up to your wedding?

Amelia: Mark is so great because he’s so awesome but so humble and unassuming. He has the kindest soul and makes me laugh so hard every day with his dry witty humor. He also has an amazingly calm demeanor, which was a perfect balance to my more anxious, high-energy personality when it came to planning a wedding. Mark really balanced out the whole process for us.

Mark: Amelia brings such passion and enthusiasm to everything she does – it gives me such energy and joy to be around her.  Especially when the day-to-day planning of the wedding got stressful or overwhelming, she made sure we never lost sight of the bigger picture – that we were planning a truly joyful and fun occasion for all the people we care about most.

2. What was most important to you in planning your Raleigh outdoor wedding?

Amelia: My sole priority was to have an amazing party, with all of our favorite people, with lots of food, drinks, and dancing. The dancing part was very important. And it went VERY well. 🙂

Mark: The priority for me was having all of our friends and families together for a fun night/weekend.

3. Are there any details or moments from your wedding that are particularly special to you? (E.g., you wore your momma’s dress, your partner unexpectedly serenaded you, there was a double rainbow all across the sky
).

Amelia: Oh man, lots of little things. I unexpectedly wore a pair of diamond earrings borrowed from my cousin and maid of honor, which had diamonds from my late grandmothers wedding ring. That was a very special last minute decision. The best man and maid of honor speeches were INCREDIBLE.

Mark:  The speeches were a highlight for me as well.  I also just really enjoyed seeing everyone gathered when we first walked out for the processional – it was so much fun and overwhelming (in a good way) to have all those people together after all the work that went in to planning everything.

4. Now that you’ve tied the knot (and survived!), what advice would you give to other folks planning their  Raleigh outdoor wedding?

I think we did a great job in delegating wedding planning activities to those who wanted to help; one bridesmaid created our seating display, another created our family photo display; family members kindly took care of the thank you gift bags for guests.

It was freeing to let go of those decisions and let others we trusted to use their best judgment. We hired a day-of coordinator to manage all day-of coordination decisions as well – highly recommended!

It’s trite to say, but it’s still worth remembering: don’t sweat the small stuff.  It’s easy to get bogged down in trying to coordinate and plan every minor detail; the reality is that not everything will go exactly as planned, and that fact won’t matter at all when it comes to how you or anyone else remembers the wedding.

5. What drew you to my photography style? Why did you ultimately decide to hire me? Was it worth it?

Ummm…YES! Totally worth it. Your “unconventional” theme of couples and wedding styles sealed the decision for us; checking out your website and seeing that you clearly value diversity in serving your clients/couples; something that is super important to us.

6. What is the first thing you want to do with the images? Wallpaper the hallway? Internet fame?

Ha!  Framed photos to family, and maybe we’ll make our own photo album.

7. What is next for you as a couple? Any big plans?

Honeymoon in Thailand and Cambodia in January 2017!

How did you meet and fall in love? I’d love to hear a little bit more of your story. 🙂

We met in 2008 at the Aggie/Eagle Football Classic, and Lenard asked me to dance. The first two times I turned him down. But the third time he asked we danced the night away and we are still dancing. â˜ș

2. Tell me about the inspiration for your wedding celebration. How did the day itself line up with your vision and expectations?

Our wedding theme was Simple Elegance, and we envisioned an intimate celebration with close friends and family. We wanted an elegant venue, elegant food, and an elegant affair while keeping it very intimate. The day turned out to be exactly what we had planned. It was a day that we will always cherish.

3. What was your favorite part of your wedding day?

Immediately after the ceremony Lenard and I were ushered into a side room where we were able to take in the moment of us having just said I do. That moment with just him and I were awesome â˜ș

4. What factors other than photos went into your decision on a wedding photographer? Why did you pick me?

When I first spoke with Courtney and the initial contact we had, I knew right then she was the photographer for us. Lenard and I are very easy going and Courtney’s personality matched perfectly. She was so helpful and easy to talk to. We selected Courtney because we felt that she would tell our story beautifully through her photos.

Some of our guest commented days later: “Your photographer was all over the place!” and that was good news to me. â˜ș

5. Did you foresee any part of your wedding day being difficult logistically or emotionally? Did I make it easier? If so, how?

It rained our entire wedding day. However Lenard and I never lost focus. Courtney made taking picture inside and outside of our beautiful venue seamless. We had such a good time with her and her assistant.

6. What is the first thing you want to do with the images?

When we receive the images Lenard and I will sit down and relive our day through Courtney’s eyes before sharing with family and friends. â˜ș

7. What is next for you as a couple? Any big plans?

Life before we got married was awesome as we have truly been blessed. The only plans Lenard and I have are to love each other unconditionally everyday regardless of the road ahead.

Janel + Lenard, thank you so much for inviting me to document your day! Your wedding wasn’t only elegant, it was also tender, joyful, and a blast to photograph. I hope you cherish these photos for years to come!

Wedding season 2015 started off with a bang with Sara + Daniel’s wintry downtown Raleigh engagement session. Icy roads, overcast skies, and drizzly weather might have deterred another couple, but Sara and Daniel embraced the crazy February weather, and together we found inspiration in unexpected places.

So often I find myself shooting engagement sessions in the same places: picturesque spring gardens, sunny fields, local parks. I appreciated Sara and Daniel’s offbeat vision for their photos, which included (in their own words): “cracked sidewalks, tall grass in empty lots, flaking murals, and rusty warehouses.” At one point during the shoot they even told me we could get grittier, so we moved to a muddy lot near train tracks and found an abandoned couch in the middle of a field. They embraced their adventurous side: traipsing through fields and climbing slippery mounds to get the perfect shot.

One of my goals for 2015 is to really challenge myself to step outside my comfort zone, so I decided to use lights for majority of this shoot. As much as I enjoy utilizing “magical” available light at sunset, some days (like this gross winter day!) you just can’t rely on that. My assistant Kasha Mammone did a wonderful job maneuvering the soft box and positioning herself in precarious spots to create the perfect light.

I love making pictures that honor my clients’ unique stories. Daniel proposed to Sara in a field of monarch butterflies in Mexico (I know, I know. Way to trump every other couple’s engagement story, guys!) The last spot we hit in Raleigh showcased a beautiful butterfly mural, which is so fitting for Sara and Daniel. These last photos are graphic and simple, but I think they are my favorites from the shoot. While any other couple would look cool in front of this mural, it contains a deeper meaning for Sara and Daniel.

Sara and Daniel, thanks for being so adventurous during our shoot! I loved collaborating with you to make these pictures and can’t wait to see how you creatively use them for your wedding!
