Ying-Ju and Ming-Feng tied the knot on March 26, 2017 in a beautiful outdoor ceremony at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham. I loved everything about documenting this Asian-fusion wedding: from the beautiful dual traditions to the butterfly release in the conservatory after the ceremony.

This sweet, well-traveled couple met in 2004 at their college harmonica club and got engaged in 2016. Ming-Feng proposed with purple tulips in Amsterdam, and Ying-Ju obviously said yes!

After moving from Taiwan to Durham, North Carolina, this couple wanted to honor their roots during their Durham celebration. They incorporated many beautiful traditional Taiwanese details into their day, like Ying-Ju’s Chinese reception dress, gold jewelry, and hand-made guest favors.

Are you planning an Asian-fusion wedding this spring and looking for a photographer who is excited about your ideas?

Or maybe you’re blending two different faith traditions and are not sure where to even start? I love helping you clarify + celebrate your true values on your wedding day. Check out my wedding photography packages and let’s work together!

A shout-out to all our fab vendors for making this day possible!

Sara + Daniel tied the knot on May 2, 2015 at Snipes Farm Retreat in Chapel Hill, NC. This creative couple planned an unconventional wedding stripped of imposed wedding traditions–proving that your wedding can be infused with imagination.

From a self-officiated ceremony to an anarcho-feminist puppet show, their unconventional wedding reflected this couple’s authenticity.

Sara and Daniel wanted their day to be a celebration of a world that is more free, just, joyful, loving, and beautiful. And their wedding certainly did not miss the mark.

Read the Q&A below to learn more about Sara + Daniel’s inspiration for their unconventional wedding celebration.

Are you planning your own unconventional wedding? Come check out the Raleigh LGBTQ Wedding Expo on February 25.

1. How did you meet and fall in love? I’d love to hear a little bit more of your story. 🙂

We met at Connecticut College when I was a freshman and Daniel was a sophomore.

We first interacted at a film showing against the war in Iraq that Daniel presented with the campus leftist group he started. I had seen Daniel around campus (who could miss his ridiculous mohawk?), but Daniel apparently got smitten with me after I made “a biting criticism of US foreign policy” (His words, not mine. I think he just thought I was cute).

After a couple of goofy missteps we connected, exchanged mix tapes, and started a fun, passionate relationship. We got a chance to spend a summer together in Mexico during different internships, and we bonded over delicious food and revolutionary politics.

Over the last eleven years we have lived together in Mexico, DC, and North Carolina, and we spent years apart while I worked/studied in Guatemala, Ecuador, and Philadelphia. Neither of us can pinpoint the moment when we realized that we are going to be life partners. In some ways I think we both always knew

2. You incorporated some really unique elements into your unconventional wedding day (Before you, I had never photographed a puppet show at a wedding!) Tell me about some of these personal touches and the inspiration behind it.

It was very important for us that each element of our unconventional wedding day felt authentic to our relationship, heritage, and values. We are two folks that like to question authority and the status quo, so it makes sense that we tried to spin wedding traditions into something that felt representative of us.

We chose to officiate our own wedding because both of us are atheists, but we wanted to make sure that some of our closest friends and family members could contribute to the ceremony.

Our close friends are in a puppet troupe, the Mysterious Rabbit Puppet Army, and they offered to write and perform a puppet show for us our wedding. The puppeteers knew that I am obsessed with my cats, so they made them the narrators of this sweet anarcho-feminist puppet show. It was amazing!

3. What was your favorite part of your unconventional wedding day?

Both of us agreed that our favorite part of the wedding day was dancing the final dance while a huge group of our friends encircled us. Our DJ, Alex DB, played “Maps” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, which was on the first mixed CD I gave to Daniel. Daniel and I both cried our eyes out while our friends hugged us. It was really moving.

4. What factors other than photos went into your decision on a unconventional wedding photographer? Why did you pick me?

We wanted someone who would seem comfortable with some of our nontraditional choices. You were more than game and were very validating of our choices. You also seemed relaxed and confident.

5. Your photography package included an engagement session. What was it like to work with me during this? Did it make the wedding day easier in terms of nerves about photography or what to expect from our collaboration?

I was really not looking forward to the engagement shoot. I was very nervous because I don’t really enjoy getting my picture taken, but you made me feel at ease. Your directions helped me focus on Daniel and our relationship, rather than whether I looked good enough.

6. What is the first thing you want to do with the images from your unconventional wedding?

We want to re-experience our unconventional wedding through your amazing photos!

7. What is next for you as a couple? Any big plans?

It’s been almost difficult going back to our normal routine considering we had such a wonderful unconventional wedding day! This fall we’re traveling to Vietnam and Laos. We’re excited to go on an adventure together.

8. Now that you are seasoned wedding planners, what advice do you have for other couples planning an unconventional wedding? 🙂

Be playful! Many traditional wedding elements conflict with our radical feminist sensibilities. We kept the traditions we liked, and we re-imagined or tossed the traditions we did not like.

Sara and Daniel, thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of your day. There are times when photographing events feels like heavy labor, but this felt like child’s play- and I owe that to the environment of playfulness and imagination that you created. It was truly one of the most enjoyable celebrations I have ever witnessed. Thank you!

Una + Sam tied the knot in Chapel Hill on April 29, 2017  in their colorful, spirited non-traditional Rigmor House wedding.

These lovebirds met as high school sophomores (shout-out to Mr. Reed and his outdoor ed class for bringing them together!) Fast-forward several years, when Sam proposed over a game of scrabble. Una said yes, naturally.

I loved everything about this Rigmor House wedding- from the lush ferns (grown by Una’s dad for months!) to the fire alarm snafu during dinner, which prompted Una to borrow a firefighter’s helmet for magic-hour portraits while everyone else evacuated the building, laughing and drinking, unfazed by the turn of events.

It doesn’t hurt that Sam has a glorious man-bun, either, or that Una makes the world’s best/scariest faces. All. The. Time.

This spirited couple sat down and talked with me about their Rigmor House wedding in their own words. Read about their experience below, and get ready to laugh! 🙂

1. What are some of your favorite things about your partner? How were these attributes expressed during or leading up to your wedding?

Sam : Una is my perfect other half. She is calm where I am high stress and high stress where I am calm. We balance out each other’s goofiness and seriousness. But most importantly, we compromise frequently and willingly, but we don’t ever let each other stop being our individual selves, and that was reflected beautifully and perfectly in our vows.

Una: Well crap, I don’t know how to compete with what he just said! But I love that Sam expresses his emotions with fullness and integrity and that he is so comfortable in his own skin. I love that he loved planning this wedding as much as I did, and that we did it together.

2. What was most important to you in planning your Rigmor House wedding?

Keeping it low-key, stress free, and enjoying the process of planning! (It only happens once!)

3. Are there any details or moments from your wedding that are particularly special to you? (E.g., you wore your momma’s dress, your partner unexpectedly serenaded you, there was a double rainbow all across the sky…).

Una: The morning of the wedding I woke up and went downstairs to eat toast and happened to glance out the window to see my parents digging up ferns in our backyard. TOO FUNNY. Isabelle, a family friend and our wedding planner, had spotted them weeks before and knew she wanted to use them for decoration. My mom made our wedding cake and I cherish that labor of love. She had never made a cake that large, much less a wedding cake, and it was beautiful (and DELICIOUS.)

Another sweetness was during the parent dances, which I expected to be chill dancing until my dad started spinning me around the dance floor. It was such a silly and fun moment.

Sam: I would add that our officiant (who is also a best friend from college) wrote the most simple but touching speech for the ceremony. And, since it was 92 degrees and people were melting in their chairs, it was thankfully short! And also the fire alarm – we can’t forget that! We always joked that as long as no one died at our wedding we would rate it a success, and we saw it as a good omen that the alarms do indeed work! (And no one died, so, success!)

4. Now that you’ve tied the knot (and survived!), what advice would you give to other folks planning their wedding?

Forget about the tiny details; if you’re worried someone is going to side-eye your napkins or something, know that they are going to side-eye no matter what. If you’re on a budget, scratch that, because you are on a budget, pick the things that really matter to you and go cheap on the rest. We knew we wanted a live band, so we splurged on them (they. were. AMAZING.) and in exchange, we spent $50 on my dress.

5. What is the first thing you want to do with the images? Wallpaper the hallway? Internet fame?

As a wedding gift, a friend of ours who frames art professionally is doing a few chosen photos. We are really looking forward to hanging those. And of course, we are going to make an album to be placed somewhere in our house that is easily reached for a nostalgic perusal.

6. What’s next for you as a couple? Any big plans?

Una: I finish graduate school next May and we delayed our honeymoon until after I finish. Since most of my extended family lives in Ireland, and Sam has never met many of them or traveled to Ireland, we are planning a long-awaited summer trip!

7. Anything else you’d like to add about your Rigmor House wedding or experience working with me?

While I was pretty sure from the photos alone that Courtney would be a perfect fit for us, after we met I was sure of it. She listened to our thoughts and nailed everything we wanted while also capturing wonderful moments we would never have thought to ask for. We spent zero moments worrying about photography once we booked her, and we couldn’t have had a better experience. Our wedding was joyous and loving and so much fun, and our photos reflect that.

Are you a low-key couple looking for a photographer to capture your own silliness and joy on your big day? Check out my 3 wedding photography packages and drop me a line– I’d love to hear from you!

1. What are some of your favorite things about your partner? How were these attributes expressed during or leading up to your wedding?

Crystal: I tend to worry about everything, which was magnified during the wedding planning. Dylan is so patient and level headed. I was able to rely on him to help me stay grounded and keep things in perspective. He was very supportive throughout the whole process, which helped me relax and enjoy everything.

Dylan: She is easy going and always up for a good time. This had a huge impact on the way we planned the wedding, since we really wanted everyone to enjoy themselves more than anything. We also had a few hiccups the during the reception, but we both decided to let it go and enjoy the night regardless.

2. What was most important to you in planning your wedding?

For both of us, our priority (second to getting hitched) was that everyone enjoyed themselves at the reception. In addition to our friends, we both have large extended families that we are close to and we just wanted everyone to have a good time celebrating with us. It was also a really special for us to have so many people that we love be able to come together and party with us.

3. Are there any details or moments from your wedding that are particularly special to you? (E.g., you wore your momma’s dress, your partner unexpectedly serenaded you, there was a double rainbow all across the sky…).

Our ceremony turned out to be a really special moment. Our minister is a good friend of Dylan’s and the speech she delivered was perfectly suited for the two of us, with a lot of personal details and incorporating our story into our marriage. It was really wonderful to have something so important be so personal and it was a surprise for both of us, since we didn’t know what she was going to say.

4. Your photography package included an engagement session. What was it like to work with me before the wedding? Do you have a favorite photo or moment from your session?

It was great to have the opportunity to work with you before the wedding, just so we could get comfortable with you and with being photographed. And we went on a little adventure with you! Our favorite photos were in the field at the end of the shoot. The scenery was so beautiful and by that time we had loosened up a bit. You can tell from the photos we were actually having fun, not just there taking photos.

5. Now that you’ve tied the knot (and survived!), what advice would you give to other folks planning their wedding?

Our advice would be to not sweat the small stuff. And remember, the whole reason you are doing all of this is get married, to start a new chapter in your life with your partner. The little things just don’t matter when you think about what really matters.

6. What is the first thing you want to do with the images? Wallpaper the hallway? Internet fame?

We both just want to see them to remember the day a little better and see the moments that were captured – it all went by so fast! I’m sure we’ll hang some in the house too and some people will probably be getting pictures for presents with the holidays coming up 🙂

7. What is next for you as a couple? Any big plans?

We’ve been so busy with wedding planning, that we’re just excited to get back to normal – hanging out with our friends, having some free time and working on our house that has been neglected lately.

—

Crystal + Dylan, thanks for being so easy and fun to work with for both your engagement session and your wedding! I loved how down-to-earthy (and goofy) you were, and I hope these photos bring you much joy and laughter for many years to come. Enjoy!

Betsy + Eric tied the knot in a summery outdoor wedding on July 9, 2016 at Mountain View Farm in Rougemont, NC. Their celebration featured a lovely mix of romantic elements (like a horse-drawn carriage!) and a few spontaneous surprises…like a dancing T-Rex.

Read the Q&A with this exuberant couple, featured below, to learn more about their wedding inspiration and photography experience!

—

1. What are some of your favorite things about your partner? How were these attributes expressed during or leading up to your wedding?

I love the fact that Eric keeps me smiling and laughing and reminding me not to stress over the little things. I hadn’t been nervous through out the entire planning process or even the day of the wedding until it came time to walk through those doors with my dad. I was trying to keep it together and knew I was going to break down and cry or miss step and land flat on my face, but the minute I turned the corner and saw Eric, all of my nerves completely went away and it was just he and I and that infectious smile of his.

He’s also really good at keeping me on my toes and sneaking in surprises…T-Rex is a great example. I never saw this coming and it was such a huge hit!

2. What was most important to you in planning your wedding?

Trying to keep it as simple as possible! I normally handle stress pretty well and by keeping things easy and knocking them out when I had a spare moment, saved me the headache later on. I’m also one of the worst procrastinators so not waiting to the last minute to get things checked off was a bit of a hassle, but planning this wedding def helped with that!

3. Were there any details or moments during your wedding that were particularly special to you? (i.e. there was a double rainbow across the sky, you wore your momma’s dress)

a) Being able to wear my grandmother’s jewelry. She has always had the coolest jewelry. The pieces that she let me wear (gold bracelet with sapphires and diamonds, pearl bracelet, and her cocktail ring) were the pieces I used to wear when I was younger and she would let me play dress up with them (of course I was only allowed to wear them in the house with her watching over me like a hawk!)

b) As you well know we went back and fourth with the whole carriage ride. I’m so glad we were able to make this happen and include the Clydesdales. I’ve been around horses since I was 6 (that’s showing my age…haha) and have never felt more carefree and relaxed then when I’m with them. The fact that we not only had the Clydesdales, but the others horses in the field, truly made the day. I can’t wait to see all the photo bombs from Leo 🙂

c) Seeing Eric standing up there at the alter and being teary eyed and giving me a wink when I was close enough, is one of my favorite moments. It’s the little things like that, that mean everything.

d) Mountain View Farm is more than just a venue to me, it’s become a second home and a second job for me as well. The staff their is part of my family so having them help me make my day everything I could have imagined, meant the world. Because I have been working so many weddings there, I was able to get an idea of things I wanted and things I def did not. A lot of this applied to the music. I always expressed how much I didn’t like the club songs like Whip and Nae Nae, and the Boots with the Fur, or even Soldier Boy, and it never failed, that these were played at multiple weddings. So when the girls (Sandra, Renae, Lisa, and Krystal) all lined up and sat me down in a chair, I knew what was coming. It was hysterical and so us!

e) Walking down the isle with my Dad and then our dance. We picked a song that meant the most to him and never rehearsed it. haha. Which is typical of us. The entire time we were dancing, we were talking and making sure to not let the other one cry. He’s my rock.

f) Lastly…that damn T-Rex!!! How awesome was that?? I mean really, who does that! Leave it to Eric to try and out do all the other weddings we’d been to. I think he succeeded.

4. Now that you’ve tied the knot (and survived!), what advice would you give to other folks planning their wedding?

Just breathe!!! Remember that it’s about what you and your soon to be spouse want. Make it yours (but make some small adjustments to help satisfy the parentals). Have a strong group for your bridesmaids and groomsmen that help you remember your love for each other and will bend over backwards to make sure everything goes like it needs to. Lastly, if budget allows, get a wedding planner! Krystal saved my tail on so many things and went above and beyond to make everything perfect. This helped keep me calm to know she was handling everything.

5. What drew you to my photography style? What factors led you to choose me as your photographer?

Knowing how Eric and I are and how both of our families would be, I knew that we needed someone who could appease the parents with the formal shoots, but then break out and get the candids. We wanted every moment captured, from the planned shots to the crazy dancing and drinking. After looking through your portfolio (I basically stalked you) I knew that you were going to be perfect! Based on the few teasers, I knew that it was well worth hiring you, and I can’t wait to see what we get, plus I can’t wait to plan more photo shoots in the future!

6. What is the first thing you want to do with the images? Wallpaper the hallway? Internet fame?

Keep them all to myself and make the others squirm with anticipation! What will more than likely happen, is as soon as I get them, I’m going to blow up the internet and make all of our friends jealous of how awesome our wedding was 🙂 And of course share them with my mother and mother in law, the threats are starting to get serious 🙂

7. What’s next for you as a couple? Any big plans?

Next up is starting a family. Sooner than later 🙂 So that extra shoot might be for a baby announcement.

8. Anything else you’d like to add?

Thank you for everything Courtney! You were amazing to work with!!!

—

Betsy + Eric, thank you so much for being such a fun, spontaneous couple and throwing an awesome shindig that reflected your personalities. Y’all were a blast, and I hope you love these photos for years to come!

Jenn + Kennedy tied the knot on July 1, 2016 in a summery outdoor wedding at Carrigan Farms in Mooresville, NC. This couple knows the secret to successfully pulling off a July wedding in the intense North Carolina humidity: they threw a laid-back celebration where their guests could wear bathing suits and swim in the quarry. This may be the first (and only!) wedding that featured a “first plunge” instead of a “first dance,” and I hope these images of Jenn + Kennedy’s unconventional celebration make a splash. 🙂

1. What are some of your favorite things about your partner? How were these attributes expressed during or leading up to your wedding?

Kennedy: I love Jenn’s spontaneity and how she’s always up for an adventure. Last fall, we kind of got tired of planning our wedding, so we actually ended up making a lot of wedding decisions less than a month before – like desserts and sky lanterns. Some details were put together just the week leading up.

Jennifer: The main reason we got overwhelmed wedding planning is mostly because of me. I was a bit ridiculous and fickle, but Kennedy was and always is the rock and constant to my crazy whims. He really keeps me grounded and just kept telling me (over and over) that at the end of the day, we would be married, and that was all that really matters.

2. What was most important to you in planning your wedding?

Jennifer: We (read: I) eventually realized that we really wanted to have a wedding that was true to us. A large part of me getting overwhelmed towards the beginning was because I started planning a wedding trying to make everyone happy – something quite impossible. We swapped out some wedding traditions that really didn’t reflect us as a couple like the first dance (we both have two left feet) and cake (we both love ice cream and pie more) and incorporated elements like a first plunge and lanterns. Whoa, I didn’t even realize the water and fire duality until just now.

Kennedy: I wanted a wedding where Jenn and I would have a good time and that everyone could enjoy at least some aspect. I think we were successful.

3. Are there any details or moments from your wedding that are particularly special to you? (E.g., you wore your momma’s dress, your partner unexpectedly serenaded you, there was a double rainbow all across the sky…).

Jennifer: I really loved the handkerchief that Kennedy got embroidered for me, so much so that I couldn’t bring myself to use it while I was balling during the ceremony. I loved how we were able to incorporate a lot of Chinese traditions into the wedding without it seeming too haphazard. I know it meant a lot to my mom for me to wear a qipao and set off lanterns.

Kennedy:  I loved seeing Jenn walk down the aisle and our side conversations during the ceremony. It was also so much fun getting to dance with everyone.

4. Your photography package included an engagement session. What was it like to work with me before the wedding? Do you have a favorite photo or moment from your session?

Jennifer: It was awesome having an engagement session before the wedding with you because it gave us a chance to get comfortable in front of a camera and to see your process. It was super easy and fun, and you did a great job of extrapolating what we kind of photos we wanted. I love the one where Kennedy and I are wearing hats my grandmother knitted and are goofing off. I also really love all the candid photos.

Kennedy: My favorite photo is the one with all four of us (me, Jenn, Nil, and Kola), but I know Jenn thinks Kola and Nil look derpy.

5. Now that you’ve tied the knot (and survived!), what advice would you give to other folks planning their wedding?

Have the wedding that you want, not the wedding you think you should have or that other people want and that at the end of the day, you will be married, and that’s all that really matters.

6. What is the first thing you want to do with the images? Wallpaper the hallway? Internet fame?

Jennifer: All of the above! Our family and friends have been asking for pictures since the wedding and I can’t wait to get some put around the house. I’m also ready to obnoxiously set the photos as the wallpaper for every electronic device I own.

7. What is next for you as a couple? Any big plans?

Jennifer: We’re just looking forward to spending time together as a couple. Unfortunately, I started an away rotation right after the wedding.  So we’re super excited that we get 4 days together this weekend, the longest since we got married! We’re hoping to go on a honeymoon this winter, but it might depend on how much hibernation I’ll need after my surgery rotation.

8. Anything else you’d like to add about your wedding, photography experience, or anything else?

Thanks for being as excited about our eclectic wedding as we were and even getting wet to shoot our “first plunge”.  You were so easy to work with and really took the time to understand what we wanted out of our photos. We can’t wait to see them!

Jenn + Kennedy, it was such an honor to photograph your wedding, which was one of the most refreshing summer celebrations I’ve witnessed (no pun intended). 🙂 From the first plunge to your incorporation of Chinese traditions into your celebration, I admire how intentional you were in crafting a day that was true to your personalities but still inclusive of your friends and family. Thank you for being such a genuine and rockin’ couple!

Lara + Scott tied the knot on November 15, 2014 at The Gardens at Gray Gables in Summerfield, NC. Some couples shy away from having a winter wedding, but Lara and Scott’s outdoor ceremony couldn’t have been any more beautiful with the rich golden afternoon light. 1. Tell me a little about your story. How did you meet and fall in love?

For the past decade, Scott was a professional mariner living aboard a small cruise ship, but during the fall of 2012, he was volunteering on a Senatorial campaign on the east coast and Lara had just come home from six months living in Vietnam.   Both were out with respective friends one cool October night, when Lara’s friend Andie asked Scott about his hat – which read the Sea Lion.  After discovering he was a sailor she introduced Lara, and the rest as they say is history. Eighteen months later, after many flights between Hawaii and Alaska and DC and a couple of stops in Arkansas, Scott left life on the open sea and headed east.

2. What was your favorite moment from the day?

L: I can’t pick one – but I definitely liked when Scott would wink at me during the ceremony and when we were introduced as Lara and Scott Brock!

S: Also, the sea of smiling faces of loved ones and friends in one room.

3. What factors led to your decision in having an outdoor ceremony in November? What advice do you have for other couples planning a similar wedding?

L: I always wanted to get married outside, and NC can be beautiful in November.  Sometimes it can even be warm – like the 70 degree day we had the Wednesday before we got married. And having both the wedding and the ceremony in the same place seemed ideal.

S: My advice is to encourage your guests to dress warmly and make sure you have heaters lined up!  We had blankets out at the ceremony and hot cider to keep people warm.

4. What factors other than photos went into your decision on a wedding photographer? Why did you decide to pick me?

We wanted a photographer to catch the essence of our friends and loved ones at our wedding.  To catch the smiles on peoples faces and the love in our hearts.  After looking at a few photographers’ websites, Lara spoke with Courtney and felt like she was someone we would want to share my day with.  You seemed more interested in telling a story than taking posed photos.

5. From booking to delivery of images and seeing the results, what in your mind made it the right choice for us to collaborate? Did anything surprise you?

So far – you have done just that – captured us and our our loved ones!

6. What’s next for you as a couple?

1) Enjoying being newlyweds, 2) Building a nest that is big enough for all our wedding presents, a garden, and other things that grow…  and 3) Starting a family!

Lara and Scott, I couldn’t have asked for a better wedding experience to commemorate my last wedding of 2014. Thank you for inviting me to document your day! I enjoyed spending time with your families (and all of the adorable kiddos on the dance floor!) I hope you enjoy these photos for years to come!

1. What was your favorite moment from the day?

K: There is no way I could only choose one. During the ceremony our officiant, Mary Larach, asked all our guests to say ‘I Do’ if they supported our vows and promised to encourage us in our marriage. I also really loved that Rob said ‘Hell Yeah’ to our vows instead of ‘I Do’.

2. What factors led to your decision in having an outdoor ceremony in October? What advice do you have for other couples planning a similar wedding?

K: We decided to have an outdoor wedding because, well, I cannot remember actually thinking of anything else, it just seemed like the right thing to do for us. October was another no brainier, I have loved fall since I was a kid, I have always been a big fan of the gourds and the rich colors of the season; I loved having a wedding that was colored not only with flowers but other natural objects like leaves and gourds. Rob I think fell in love with fall in NC when we took our first trip up to Boone, NC and he was able to see all the beautiful colors and textures of the season. He is also a lumberjack at heart so, it seemed fitting for him.

The advice I have for other people planning an outdoor fall wedding is to use the farmers’ market! I was able to get all of the flowers, gourds and other natural materials the day before and they were all reasonably priced. Also, as the daughter of a local farmer I felt good knowing I was supporting the community.

R: I love the outdoors.  It’s where Kelsey and I “come alive”.  The idea, however, of planning for a year hoping for good weather on a single specific day is a terrifying prospect.  Advice for similarly minded couples would be to pick a venue with some flexibility.  One of the advantages of our venue was the option to move the ceremony inside if the weather wasn’t ideal.

3. What factors other than photos went into your decision on a wedding photographer? Why did you decide to pick me?

K: We did not want a Pinterest-Photo type wedding, we also wanted to limit the number of posed pictures. Rob and I love the personalities of each other, our families and friends and we wanted Courtney to capture that. She has a great way of capturing pictures specific to the couple, viewing her website and speaking with friends who have used her, I cannot think of a single photo that I saw more than once. This is what made Courtney the perfect fit for us.

R: Kelsey said she wanted Courtney Potter.

4.  From booking to delivery of images and seeing the results, what in your mind made it the right choice for us to collaborate? Did anything surprise you?

K: Courtney’s attitude and disposition as soon as I spoke with her and throughout the wedding day itself is what made her the right choice for Rob and me. We are both from very…cooky families and I never once felt uncomfortable or silly explaining our quirks or being ourselves.

5.  What’s next for you as a couple?

K: In April we will be Honeymooning in Ireland! We are also saving up to purchase a house with some land so we can start doing more with gardening and our love, no, more like obsession with dogs.

6. Anything else you’d like to add about your wedding?

K: Rob and I are both very thankful for everyone who celebrated with us and especially our amazing family and dear friends who helped us set up. I think I had as much fun setting up as I did at the wedding itself.

Kelsey + Rob, thank you for being such an easy couple to work with! Your laid-back personalities and sense of humor made photographing your day a breeze. I loved how willing you both were to collaborate in order to get the best photo–thanks for agreeing to get dressed outside, Kelsey!  🙂 I am so excited to share these photos with you and can’t wait to work with your families again this March during your sister’s wedding!

High school sweethearts Heather & Jacob’s wedding was the perfect start to the fall wedding season. Carolyn Van Houten (my second shooter) and I traveled up to  Arrington, VA, in beautiful Nelson County.  The leaves were just starting to turn on Heather & Jacob’s crisp fall wedding day.  Beautiful yellows illuminated by the golden sunlight made their guest appearances for the day!

One of my favorite aspects of Heather & Jacob’s day was visiting Heather’s grandparents’ house in the middle of Nelson County.  Heather got ready there, and it was such a fun, meaningful environment to shoot in.  I always love the natural light at hotels, but there’s something special about being in a familial setting.  I loved all of the chicken/rooster decorations, which reminded me of my husband’s decor taste. Heather’ grandmother hung out with the girls while they got their hair done, and that was especially sweet.

Heather & Jacob held a beautiful, intimate outdoor wedding at Oak Ridge Estate, a 200-year-old historic property in Arrington. They exchanged vows underneath a canopy of the Estate’s most beautiful trees.  The weather was absolutely perfect–dramatic clouds filled the skies during our couples’ portraits but allowed for rays of sunshine to peek through.  After shooting many sweltering hot and humid North Carolina weddings this summer, it was refreshing to be almost chilly during this wedding!
